when at some point in the next few years donald trump succeeds in proving that obama's birth certificate's a fraud, how will that affect the ability to govern the country? no, no. i guess what i'm kind of struck by is we're talking about now few days away from the second inauguration, what are the big themes to define the obama term and seems to me maybe more than we have seen in the recent past, this second term really, the basic contours of the second term set in place. it is this fight over what the safety net is, what the balance between spending cuts and revenue increases should be in terms of dealing with the deficit. that's been the battle that's waged since early 2011 and republicans grabbed control of the house. they have the house for two years and feels like more of a ceremonial second inaugural than usual. >> yeah. and i think he's going to have a very tough -- toure was right saying i have a limited idea of how much to get done in this term. lbj in 1965 had had the largest landslide in history, more democrats in congress than any other time in the 20th century except for roose

from now, eight years from now president obama is going to go down as having an incredibly effective presidency in terms of legislation and moving the ball forward on a number of social issues. we haven't even talked about gay marriage, don't ask don't tell. >> oddly enough, he did what many presidents actually do in their second term. he did it in his first. so many presidents would have said, well, health care, that's going to be so difficult, i'm going to save it for year five after i'm safely re-elected. did he the contrarian thing. he got it done in the first two years, so, oddly enough, some of the old rules really don't apply. >> harold, in terms of the keeping o.f.a. active, although under a slightly different name, karl rove had nothing positive to say about that, unsurprisingly. let's play that. >> go figure. >> let's not pass over this ethics issue. for example, on the inaugural committee we now know the inaugural committee is collecting information about everybody who is attending the inaugural and says they will give it over to outside groups. well, is one of those group

the answer, the country chose obama, he gets four years. want to save the republic? win the next election. liz, if charles krauthammer recommending the gop be less intransigent, do you think inside those meetings going on this weekend there will be some message, some form of that message? >> look, i think there's an amazing amount of soul searching going on within the republican party right now. and it's a troubled time for the party because there is no single standard bearer. it's not as if there's one leader who is charting a course and saying, yes, we're going to compromise or no, we're not. and -- and so, you know, the fact remains in the last two national elections presidential elections, the republicans lost. so they've got to figure out a way to listen to those voters who, you know, decide close elections. it's the middle of america. and the middle of america has said repeatedly, get something done. we'll see if the republicans listen. >> and alex, you know, they've brought in a pollster this weekend, they want to talk about, for example, how to appeal t women

impeachment, before president obama had even suggested anything. steve stockman wanted to impeach him as a gun grabber. that, incidentally, is how he won his race to go back to congress this past year, too. he called his republican opponent in the primary a gun grabber. everybody's a gun grabber. president obama did introduce yesterday a very broad package of reforms to try to deal with gun violence in this country. expanded access to mental health treatment, improvements in the background checks system, resources for schools to have more armed guards on site if they want them. and yes, a renewal of the old assault weapons ban that we had for ten years before it expired in 2004. since president obama introduced those measures all of the discussion in washington has been about the viability of what he is proposing, right? renewing the assault weapons ban, that's not viable, that'll never pass. that is the chorus from washington. the nra of course says that nothing will pass. old steve stockman says i don't care if anything passes, let's impeach him
